Loss of Nitrogen - Actions required by Liquefied Gas carriers

An emergency can occur at any time and in any situation. Effective action is only possible if pre-planned and practical procedures have been developed and are frequently exercised.


Loss of nitrogen may affect a number of systems.

i) Check the seal gas for HD and LD compressor’s gland and bulkhead seals

ii) Check the annular space in cargo tanks

iii) Check the IBS (Inter Barrier Space) and IS (Insulation space) in membrane vessels

iv) Check the purging operation (lines, equipment)

v) Check the Fire Extinguisher System in vent masts

vi) Check the gauge bubble system

vii) Check the engine room gas line purging function

viii) Consider - substituting compressed air for the HD and LD Compressor’s bulkhead seals

ix) Consider - substituting compressed air for the annular space in cargo tanks
